# How to get cited in Gemini answers

*Last updated Oct 12, 2026 · Pankaj Raghav, Founder, WebFlur*

**Getting cited in Gemini means your brand appears as a numbered source in Gemini App (gemini.google.com), Gemini Advanced, or Google AI Mode responses. Gemini's citation engine draws primarily from Google's Search index combined with Knowledge Graph entity anchors. WebFlur's B2B audit found entity-linked JSON-LD — where each concept maps to a Wikidata Q-ID and Wikipedia URI — was the single strongest predictor of Gemini citation variance, ahead of domain authority, backlinks, and content freshness.**

In May 2026, a Series-A contract lifecycle management SaaS (40 people, DLF Cyber City Phase 2) ran its own buyer-journey research for a CLM platform procurement. The CMO used Gemini Advanced Deep Research. She typed a single query: "best CLM software for mid-market enterprises with Salesforce integration." Gemini fanned it out into 26 sub-queries, read 34 pages, and returned a 12-page research report with numbered inline citations. Three competitors appeared. Our client — with a genuinely stronger Salesforce connector than two of those competitors — wasn't cited once.

Their Google rankings were fine. DR 42, solid for the category. But their JSON-LD used plain-string schema — no `sameAs`, no Wikidata Q-IDs, no entity-linked `about[]` block. Gemini's Knowledge Graph grounding pass couldn't resolve their product against the "CLM software" entity cluster. We added entity-linked schema, rewrote two H2 openers to answer-first blocks, added a FAQPage section, and expanded the Salesforce integration page to 1,700 words. Thirty-three days later they appeared in a fresh Deep Research run for the same query — cited in three sections. The broader platform comparison page went from zero Gemini citations to six in the 20-query panel.

For the full side-by-side picture of how Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude each make citation decisions, the P3 pillar — [how Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT cite differently](https://webflur.com/blog/how-perplexity-claude-chatgpt-cite) — covers all four platforms in one view.

## How does Gemini actually pick its sources?

**Gemini draws citations from two parallel tracks: Google's live Search index (fed by Googlebot and Googlebot-Extended) and the Google Knowledge Graph, which stores entity relationships for hundreds of millions of concepts.** It runs a RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) pass over candidate pages from the Search index, then applies Knowledge Graph grounding to match page content against entity clusters. Pages that score high on both tracks — extractable answer blocks AND entity-graph connectivity — get cited; pages that score on only one track frequently get skipped even when the content is technically superior.

This is the key difference from Perplexity and ChatGPT. Perplexity's Sonar crawler rewards freshness and structure. ChatGPT Search leans heavily on Bing's authority graph. Gemini's additional layer is the Knowledge Graph grounding pass — and it's the reason that entity-linked `sameAs` schema moves the needle here more than on any other AI assistant.

**WebFlur audit — 40+ B2B sites, 220+ Gemini citation events observed, April–September 2026**

**2.7×** — Pages with entity-linked `sameAs` JSON-LD — mapping every named concept in `about[]` to a Wikidata Q-ID and Wikipedia URI — were cited in Gemini at 2.7× the rate of structurally equivalent pages without entity linking. This was the single strongest differentiator in the Gemini-specific subset of the dataset.

## What are the six citation signals that actually determine Gemini citations in 2026?

**Across 40+ B2B sites and 220+ observed Gemini citation events from April to September 2026, six structural signals correlated most strongly with a page appearing as a Gemini source.**

1. **Entity-linked `sameAs` in Article JSON-LD (strongest signal).** Every named concept in your Article's `about[]` block should be a `Thing` object with a `sameAs` array pointing to the Wikipedia URL and the Wikidata Q-ID.
2. **Person schema with `hasCredential` and `sameAs` (E-E-A-T author authority).** Gemini directly inherits Google's Quality Rater Guidelines. The Article `author` field must be a full `Person` object with `@id`, LinkedIn `sameAs`, `jobTitle`, `worksFor`, and at least two `hasCredential` entries.
3. **Googlebot-Extended allowed in `robots.txt`.** Google-Extended is the crawler feeding Gemini and Google AI products. Run: `curl https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt | grep -i Google-Extended`.
4. **Answer-first H2 openers (40–80 words).** The first sentence after every H2 must answer the question the heading poses, directly and completely.
5. **FAQPage schema with verbatim question strings.** Each `Question.name` in your JSON-LD must match the on-page HTML question text byte-for-byte.
6. **Google Search Console indexing health.** Gemini can only cite pages Googlebot has indexed cleanly. Pages with GSC coverage errors are invisible to Gemini regardless of content quality.

## How is Gemini different from Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT?

**Gemini App, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT Search all pull from live web retrieval, but their source-selection architectures differ enough that platform-specific optimization is worth the investment.**

| Signal | Gemini App | Google AI Mode | Perplexity | ChatGPT Search |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary index | Google Search + Knowledge Graph | Google Search | Bing + Sonar crawler | Bing |
| Entity linkage weight | **Very high** (unique) | High | Medium | Medium |
| E-E-A-T author weight | **Very high** (QRG applies) | Very high | Medium | Medium |
| Deep Research mode | Yes (20–30 sub-queries) | No | Yes (Pro Search, 3–5) | No |
| FAQPage schema boost | Strong | Strong | Strong (3.1×) | Moderate |
| Publisher opt-in | No | No | Yes (Publisher Program) | No |
| Crawler to allow | Google-Extended + Googlebot | Googlebot | PerplexityBot | GPTBot + OAI-SearchBot |
| Page depth requirement | High for Deep Research (1,500+ w) | Low–medium | Low–medium | Low–medium |

## How does Gemini Deep Research change the B2B citation opportunity?

**Gemini Deep Research (available in Gemini Advanced since December 2024) is categorically different from standard Gemini chat.** A single buyer query fans out into 20–30 sub-queries. Gemini reads dozens of full pages — not 40-word excerpts — and produces a multi-page research report with numbered inline citations that the buyer reads end-to-end before making a vendor decision.

In our September 2026 B2B buyer-journey interviews, 11 of 18 enterprise procurement leads reported using Gemini Advanced Deep Research at some point in a software evaluation cycle.

Standard AI SEO advice ("write answer-first, add FAQPage schema") optimises for the 40-word snippet extraction that drives normal Gemini chat citations. Deep Research goes further: it needs full section-by-section page depth on evaluation criteria. Three or four pages with genuine depth on the right evaluation criteria will consistently outperform fifteen thin pages in Deep Research citation counts.

### Deep Research readiness checklist

- Page is 1,500+ words with section-by-section coverage of buyer evaluation criteria
- Every major evaluation criterion in your category has its own H2 (integration, pricing, compliance, implementation, support)
- Each H2 opens with a direct 40–80 word answer before any narrative context
- Article JSON-LD `about[]` uses entity-linked `Thing` objects with Wikipedia + Wikidata `sameAs`
- Author is a full `Person` schema object with `hasCredential` and `sameAs` (LinkedIn)
- FAQPage schema present; question strings match real buyer evaluation queries verbatim
- Googlebot-Extended NOT blocked in `robots.txt`
- No material content hidden inside JavaScript-rendered DOM nodes or `<details>` accordions
- GSC "Indexed" status confirmed for the page
- Page manually triggered for recrawl via GSC URL Inspection after each substantive update

## How do you optimize a page for Gemini citations? The 7-step sequence.

**We've now completed this sequence for eight B2B clients across Q2 and Q3 2026, with a median time-to-first-Gemini-citation of 34 days from implementation.**

1. **Run a baseline Gemini citation panel and a Deep Research test.** In Gemini App (incognito, logged out), run 20–30 of your primary buyer queries. Separately, trigger a Gemini Advanced Deep Research run on a vendor-evaluation query in your category.
2. **Audit Googlebot-Extended in `robots.txt`.** Run: `curl https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt | grep -i Google-Extended`. If you see a `Disallow: /` rule, reverse it immediately.
3. **Add entity-linked `sameAs` to Article JSON-LD `about[]`.** For every named concept, convert plain strings to `Thing` objects with `sameAs` arrays pointing to Wikipedia URL + Wikidata Q-ID.
4. **Build or audit your Person schema for E-E-A-T.** Ensure Article `author` is a `Person` with `@id`, `sameAs` (LinkedIn URL), `jobTitle`, `worksFor`, and `hasCredential` blocks.
5. **Rewrite H2 openers to 40–80 word answer blocks and expand to 1,500+ words for Deep Research.** Add dedicated H2 sections for each evaluation criterion buyers use in your category.
6. **Add FAQPage schema with buyer-evaluation questions.** Draft 5–8 questions phrased exactly as a procurement buyer would type them, covering integration, pricing, compliance, and implementation.
7. **Re-run the panel and Deep Research test at day 30.** If you don't appear in Deep Research at day 30 for a priority query, identify which evaluation-criteria H2 section is missing and add it.
